Airline pilot dies at the controls

Want to know why the idea of having airliners flown by a solo pilot is unlikely to see the light of day in our lifetimes? This is why.

A Qatar Airways flight between Manila and Doha had to be diverted this morning after the pilot collapsed at the controls and died. What little we know is reprinted here by Gadling.

Unfortunately, this is not unheard of. A Continental Airlines pilot died in mid-flight a year ago. In both instances, co-pilots took over, bringing the aircraft, with its hundreds of passengers and cabin staff, to a safe landing.

This latest in-flight pilot death just puts an exclamation on the lunacy of even considering operating an airliner with just one pilot on board, an idea that has been broached this year by some folks who should know better.

To the loved ones and friends of the pilot, whose name we don’t yet know, our condolences.
