Hi! Are you aware of any African American travel groups aimed at senior citizens? Or any groups designed to help Black folks learn different languages? Thanks!

Hi, Tomika. Thanks for posting a couple of great questions.

I’m not aware at this time of any African-American travel groups aimed specifically at senior citizens, but I believe two things:
    1) They do exist, but mainly as informal groups of family or friends.
    2) We need a LOT more of them, and formal organizations that anyone can join.
And I hope to have a hand in creating them in the coming months.

As for languages, we’re all pretty much on our own with learning how to communicate beyond our native English. And the cost of college and university classes, even extension courses, is now, in most cases, beyond ridiculous. That’s the bad news. The good news is that today we have alternative methods of learning languages — of learning anything, really — and you’re using it right now.

The Internet is the most powerful learning tool ever created. The Web is CRAWLING with language tutorials — for Latin-based and non-Latin European languages, Native American languages, Asian and African languages. The best part: Many if not most of them are FREE. There are podcasts for learning languages online — again, often free.

And once you’ve started to build yourself a grounding in a language, you have access to the world’s largest language lab in the form of Internet radio. You can listen to foreign radio stations that broadcast in the language you’re learning. You can build your vocabulary, acclimate yourself to your new language at the pace and in the accents with which the locals speak it, learn to detect differences in accent or dialect that tell you things about where the speaker is from. And as a fringe benefit, you introduce yourself to new music and news and opinions you otherwise might never hear.

    And that’s all free, too.

The one downside from listening to Internet radio: You may find yourself spending a lot more money on music! But in the end, it’s a small price to pay for something that’s going to benefit you all your life.
